The Empress Theatre is putting on a great show right now, The Spitfire Grill. I love getting exposure to new musicals and this one has amazing music and a great storyline. As a bonus, the small cast (only 7 people, plus 2 musicians) are some of the best to ever grace the Empress' stage. This show is definitely in my top 10 favorite shows I have seen at the Empress. P.S. Mason happens to be in the cast and although his part doesn't require any speaking or singing, his character is central to the story and he does a great job in the show!

Obsession: Gold

I tend to have a bit of an obsessive personality and to be honest, I like it that way. It is so fun to get wrapped in dreaming about something and I think it gives me drive to accomplish things too. (I think this explains why I was so boy crazy growing up!) Remember that pillow a couple years ago?

My current obsession though is not something I ever thought would be so wonderful to me. I remember feeling devastated and quickly embarrassed by my gut reaction when my engagement ring my husband presented to me when he proposed was yellow gold. It was 2004 and EVERYONE was doing white gold. Now I have grown to love my ring for 2 reasons:

1. I love that it is different than everyone else my age

2. because it is yellow gold! (it doesn’t hurt that it is decked out with diamonds too.)

Love these sky lanterns. A perfect way to end the evening, releasing your new year wishes into the night sky. #1 The North Pole Express

My absolute favorite experience of the Holiday season had to be our trip on the North Pole Express. We sent invites to our oldest niece and 2 nephews inviting them to join us on a “train outing” without giving much more detail.

We went around and picked them all up (their parents were kind enough to let us steal them away for an afternoon/evening) and gave them each a present to open once they were all settled. They each received their own copy of the book The Polar Express so they could follow along as I read the book aloud. I wanted to review the story so it would click in their heads that this was no regular train ride, but instead they were being transported into the story of The Polar Express where they become the children in the book.

The train left at 5:00. We were able to see the train and train station in daylight while boarding and getting settled, then were able to watch the beautiful sunset as we rode along. The kids dressed in their pajamas were treated to cookies and hot chocolate by elves; carolers came through periodically to sing for our train car; and the hostess of the evening played Christmas trivia, asked the kids questions, and led us in some Christmas carols.

The ride was only about 40 minutes, each way. As we reached the “North Pole” we saw Santa and Mrs Clause waving to us in their “front lawn” decked out in Christmas lights. We were told that Santa would be boarding the train and coming through to see the children in our car soon. The train went back the way we came and we practiced our best Santa inspired songs hoping he would hear our joyful noise and hurry to see us. The hostess helped the kids practice what the kids might ask for from Santa and we all waiting in anticipation for him to arrive.

It was magical seeing their faces light up as Santa asked each of them what they wanted for Christmas, shook their hands and gave them each a bell.

We finished the evening with dinner at the local Dairy Keen which is a darling little train themed diner. They each got a kids meal with a toy inside. As our cute niece was finishing her food, she said “Uncle Mason, how about dessert?” Mason looked at me and said, “How can we say no to that!?!” Kiddie cones would suffice with all the other sugar we had them hopped up on and as I suspected the boys weren’t really interested once they had their toys in hand.

The night was every bit as special as I had hoped (as I had been planning the event out, running through every detail in my mind since August). We loved getting to spend some more personal time with our nieces and nephews we love this holiday season, as nothing seems to bring more magic to the holidays then sharing it with children.

#2 Savior of the World

I first went to see this production 10 or so years ago. I was on a date so I think I was quite distracted, wondering if my outfit was okay, how I was sitting, and if my hands were poised just right to invite or discourage hand holding. So I really didn't remember much about the production. So, I went this time around expecting to see the ever familiar Nativity, but got so much more!

First of all I was amazed that although we were some of the last people in the theater (How is it that when I am “on time” everyone else is still there before me?) we probably got the best seats in the balcony: Front and center. They just happened to be the only 2 seats together in the whole upper section. I felt blessed.

Then, they had beautiful programs that explained some of the Jewish traditions at the time around Christ’s birth. Although we hear the nativity story time and time again, this really helped me gain a better understanding of the temple ceremonies, why Mary and Joseph had to go to Bethlehem, and even The First Resurrection.

Not to mention, the production was so well done. The direction, costumes, voices, acting, all were top notch; not that I would expect anything less from the Church.

I left feeling like I had learned more about my Savior in that hour and a half than I had in my 28 years leading up to this point. Really, I knew about all the circumstances and stories surrounding the events, but this production just helped me put it all together to gain a stronger testimony. I truly loved every minute of it and hope to be able to catch the show again next year!

#3 Family Christmas Parties

I have always loved Mason’s family but for some reason, this year I was especially excited for his family Christmas parities. To me, they are the quintessential party that every kid (and adult, in my case) dream of.

Growing up, my extended family lived far away and so we usually had own quiet Christmas celebrations with my parents and 2 brothers. My mom always found a way to make them magical for us and although I can appreciate the quiet simplicity of a small family gathering, there is nothing quite like being surrounded by a houseful of wonderful people you love.

His extended family all live here in Utah so they get together and do a big celebration at Aunt Kassi’s home every year, complete with a production of the nativity, singing carols, a family talent show, fabulous food, and lots and lots of family.

Kris, Blake, Mason and Brady sang 3 Barber Shop songs and sounded great!

Then the Sunday before Christmas his immediate family (all 7 children plus spouses and our nieces and nephews) gather at his parent’s home for our traditional Lasagna dinner, spiritual message from Dad, and gift exchange. What a lovely way to celebrate the Holidays!

Among other things, his parents gave us these beautiful illustrated church songbooks

#4 Work Parties

We made it to one of Mason’s Work Parties (they had 2). The Pediatric Department always does a big event at the Williams Building on the U of U HealthCare Campus. They convert an entire floor of the office building into a formal convention space. I love the way they have it set up with various food stations: seafood appetizers, salads & veggie appetizers, main course station with roast beef, potatoes and hot veggies, pasta bar, drink station, and a whole room dedicated to desserts. It really is a wonderful affair to enjoy the company of your co-workers and eat fabulous food.
My company Christmas party was held at Flemings Steakhouse. Our firm had done some of the design work on the Gateway so it was a wonderful place to hold our event and appreciate the work of our structural engineers. I was on the planning committee but not in charge (yay!) Our private room was cozy and the plated dinner was delicious! The salmon was some of the best I have ever had in my life! (I know, I am one of those crazy people who order fish when at a steakhouse, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t snag a bite of Mason’s!) We also played a game where a family member of all the employees sent in a picture of a prized possession, collection, or something that represents the employee. It was put together in a power point presentation and we all had to guess which items belonged to which of our co-workers. And guess what, I won!

As if that wasn’t enough, my generous employer also decided to give us all a Christmas gift…our very own personal use ipads! I feel so spoiled already and Christmas isn’t even here yet!

#5 Decorating my little home

I love pulling out the Christmas decorations and transforming our home into a winter wonderland.

I am always amazed with the emotions attached to the various pieces.

Whether it’s an ornament from a vacation we took together (we always buy one for each trip we take New York, Mexico, Jackson Hole, Moab, Sun Valley, etc.), a handmade project, a beautiful piece that you just “had to have,” or nativities to evoke the gratitude I feel for my Savior this time of year; Decorating is the kick off of the season for me.

I feel like a slacker that I haven't posted anything about Chaz, my little brother, coming home after serving a 2 year mission for our church. He returned home to us from South Africa on November 2, just in time for the holiday's and to be the Best Man at Robert, my other brother's, wedding.

His buddies came out to welcome him home too. They have been so excited to have him back and have hardly given him a second alone since!

It didn't take him long to get right back into his old self showing off his creative side. He was back performing his music 3 days later.

His mission blessed him in so many ways. He has grown spiritually, in maturity, in his music, and his work ethic. I am so proud of him for faithfully serving our Lord and can hardly wait to see what great things he will do next. Love ya Chaz!

P.S. He also spoiled us by bringing us so many beautiful gifts from South Africa. Shortly after I was feeling particularly South African so I took this picture to show my gratitude for sharing his beautiful things with me.

He purchased the bracelet and earring from a street market and he hand dyed the beautiful silk scarf! So fun!

Wow! Last week was such a whirlwind. Thanksgiving turned out to be really nice and my brother's wedding on Saturday kept us hopping with lots of projects, errands, work, family & fun. I have lots of pictures and updates to come but in the mean time, I saw this house tour on design mom and fell in love.

The owner describes it as "my love letter to my family." Modern yet cozy, eclectic yet realistic, colorful yet calming. I love all the thoughtful touches, great design elements, fabuolous fabric, and open spaces. I hope you feel as inspired by it as I did!

My reality:
We will be going to an LDS church building with folding chairs and tables, plastic tablecoverings , and paper plates. My only Thanksgiving responsiblitity for the whole day is a veggie tray to be put out as an appetizer ( I don't even get to be part of the real meal!) Hmph! After that they will probably just want to play games. ( I like to be productive so playing games for hours on end is enough to drive me CRAZY!)

HOWEVER, I feel very grateful to be able to spend the holiday with Mason's family. I really do love my in-laws! So even if the setting and festivities aren't quite to my liking, I will try to remember to feel grateful to be surrounded by wonderful people.

October: The month of musicals

At least it was for us. I feel so spoiled we have been to a show every weekend this month. We are always looking for fun ways to celebrate the season, but aren’t into haunted houses and such. So, for folks like us, the theater becomes a prime party!

1. The Empress: The Music Man – one of the finest shows the Empress has ever produced!

2. The movies: Phantom of the Opera via Fathom Events - as discussed here

3. Terrace Plaza Playhouse: Curtains – one of our favorite “newer” musicals just off Broadway a few years ago. It’s a great comedic murder mystery with love stories and intrigue. This show has it all. If you haven’t seen this show, I highly recommend it!

4. The Grand Theater: Wizard of Oz – my husband bought us tickets a few weeks ago and decided to surprise me. I love surprises! And to boot he even made a fabulous dinner for us before we hit the town.

5. Finishing up tonight at The Empress: Forever Plaid – we will be ushering. If you are lame like us and live in a place where trick-or-treaters can’t enter your locked condo building and don’t have children of your own, come join us. The characters come back from the grave however they are anything but zombies.

6. Throw into the mix the Gala for The Empress Theater at the Hilton Hotel. It was a great event where heard from Laura Bedore of Show Tune Saturday Night on KOSY 106.5, the new season was announced and some great singers performed snippets of each show, and we won collosimos sausage at the silent auction.

Whew! That is one great thing about living in Salt Lake there is always plenty of cultural events! It makes me so grateful to be married to a man who loves the theater as much as I do. We always have a great time together!

Halloween Decor

Are you all decked out for Halloween? I don't have a lot, but it is fun make a transition into the autumn season and put up creepy Halloween decorations to set the mood for the 31st.

My favorite thing to decorate with for Halloween: Ravens!

My Ghost I made this year of a manaquin head and cheesecloth. Spooky!!!

There are a couple things I have learned over the years as I put up seasonal decor:

1.Don't be afraid to put your regular decor away. The last thing we all need at the Holidays is more chaos and clutter. Replacing rather than just adding to will make them part of your home and not be so muddled.

2.Recently, I put the books on the bookshelf in order of color. When I put my Halloween things out though, I realized I could put the book colors of the season in the more prominent place to be coordinated with the seasonal pieces. The orange, green, purple, and black books were moved to where they could be seen & coordinated with the decor. Use what you have to lend to look!

BTW, I asked some of the other ladies in the office what they do to celebrate Halloween. I loved the idea that one of the ladies (who is in her 50's and never had children) offered. She and her husband to to the temple to do work "for the dead." Clever!

Thank you all for your kind support! Redbook magazine has teamed up with RESOLVE ( the nationali infertility association) to raise awareness for infertility. There is a whole campain called "The Truth About Trying" which includes a number of articles, a video compilation, and a special section in November's Issue. When they interviewed Barbara Collura, the Executive Director for RESOLVE she said:

Millions of women keep their baby-making challenges under wraps. Everyone has the right to privacy, of course, but that secrecy has left so many women to cope alone, in pain, and often uninformed. “It’s frustrating that our society is not more open about infertility,” says Barbara Collura, executive director of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. “When women dealing with infertility can communicate with others in their situation, they get through it in a much better state of mind and also share needed information about their options.”

Happy Birthday Mason

Mason's birthday fell on a Wednesday this year, and we decided to be rebels by hitting the town on a work night! (Walkin' on the wild side) Mason had 4 gifts to open so he got to open one at each location we went to that night, just to drag out the fun.

First stop, home where a crooked "Happy Birthday" sign and puppy awaited him.

Stop 2: Dinner @ MacCools Public House.

Mason served his mission in Ireland so we have found this restaurant to be a real treat. They serve up fabulous traditional Irish fare & more modern pub food in an atmosphere reminiscent of the Emerald Isle.

Stop 3: Marble Slab

We stopped and had a treat here when we were out in Daybreak for the Parade of Homes and he had not stopped talking about it since. So I figured that would be an easy way to make his birthday a happy one even if nothing else worked out. (That way I didn't even have to bake a cake!)

Stop 4: The Royal Albert Hall, London England

No really, they did an event celebrating the 25th anniversary of Phantom of the Opera. It was recorded live and then re-broadcast 2 other nights through Fathom Events. (So we only had to travel to Jordan Landing.) The costumes were spectacular; the set was so high-tech, and their voices made you melt!

What really made it special though was that at the very end, Andrew Lloyd Webber himself made an appearance along with the original Phantom cast. Then the evening ended with Sarah Brightman (whom he called his "Original Angel of Music" Sang along with 4 of the other prominent actors who have portrayed the phantom including Colm Wilkinson (who was the original Jean Valjean in Les Miserables) It was spectacular!

Happy 29th Birthday babe! I hope this is your best year yet!

Infertile Myrtle

WARNING: This is going to get personal...

Recently a friend of mine wrote on her blog about her struggles with getting pregnant, but she has been successful, twice. It didn't come easy, but it came. As a result, someone who wished to be anonymous wrote a mean, degrading comment totally devaluing what she has gone through. I felt so betrayed, for her. Just because everyone experiences things differently, doesn't mean they have any less significance in ones life.

I am certainly not a shy person and it is rare that I hesitate to share my opinions (even though probably I should), yet I have been totally resistant to share too much about my infertility struggles, here on my blog, for the world to see. However, it has become a big part of my life right now and something that I would like to write about. So often people are afraid to ask, and it often makes things awkward when they do. So, I was thinking that if I posted some info here, that maybe it would answer questions and maybe provide some info for others starting their journey toward fertility. (Maybe you would be willing to share your infertility experiences with me too.)

Now, I ask you, dear readers, would you be offended if I periodically gave updates, shared my thoughts, feelings, and struggles with you? Will that be a total downer and will you leave me mean comments like some mean person did to my friend? I promise that I will try not to make it too negative.

I think I have realized that one of the main reasons I haven't been more forthcoming with info in the past is due to my pride. Its a natural human reaction to try to only show our best selves, especially on our blogs :). Struggling with infertility has made me feel weak, broken, and unrelatable: ultimately it has humbled me.

I loved this video and feel it beautifully represents my experience too.

I feel like this topic of Infertility fits into my mantra of being a "modern traditionalist," living my somewhat "modern" life while yearning for the traditional role of being a mother. That works, right? My hope is not only to keep you informed, but to have a place to share some of my feelings, and maybe have the opportunity to create a bond with others who ou there who are also struggling.

(Sorry I am really behind in getting this posted!)

My older brother realized he had met the girl of his dreams and decided to make his dreams a reality. I had the honor of going with him to pick out the ring. I had a blast researching and coming up with ideas of what would "fit" his girlfriend. Although we had slightly differing opinions on what the final selection should be, I knew this had to be his decision and that Steph would appreciate knowing it is what he wanted for her (as any girl would), but purchasing from the Shane Co. (I am totally a fan, and their website is so fun!) I knew we could not go wrong.

Then, came the decision of how to propose. He and my mom thought long and hard about this and came up with a wonderful idea. She loves picnics, so we decided to set up a nice romantic, secluded picnic at the Benson Grist Mill. Then, to actually pop the question, he put together a time capsule of their lives together so far. It consisted of a tin box with pictures, ticket stubs, inside joke pieces, etc. and at the bottom had the ring box. So he would say something like this:

I made this time capsule for us to remember all the things that happened to make me fall in love with you.

Then proceed to go through the items one by one explaining why they are in there. Then just as he got to the ring he would say:

There is one picture that is missing though

As he held up the ring he would snap a picture they could add to the collection. Then give his schpeel on being together forever and ask her to marry him. Cute huh!

I was tasked with helping him prepare the food. The menu:

Antipasto platter: Dried cured italian salame and procuitto, cheese & crackers
Grilled and chilled veggie sandwiches (build your own)
Caprese Salad
Grapes
Sparkling Lemonade
Grilled Peaches with caramel sauce for dessert

It was simple but I hoped it would seem special.

My mom and I then gathered the supplies and got it all set up so that it would be ready when they arrived (unfortunately we were not fast enough as they caught us taking these pictures and we scampered off)

Finally, Rob invited all of their friends and family at Village Inn (lame I know but it made sense to me once he explained it). They have an inside joke about Pumpkin Pie so he told her

I have ordered some pumpkin pies for us to take to our parents when we tell them about our engagement. So we need to swing by Village Inn to pick them up.

The idea was to it totally unexpected. Which I think it was. When they came in there were nearly 40 of us waiting to say "Congratulations," see the ring, and give them our well wishes.

It was so much fun and I was so proud of him for going out of his way, recruiting his troops (the fam), and really making it special for her. I could not ask for a better girl for my brother. I am so happy for them!

Shabby Apple

I accidently came across Shabby Apple Clothing recently and instantly fell in love. The designs are often vintage inspired and all have classic feminine look.

This is the dress that drew me in this summer and I can't stop admiring all of their beautiful dresses, skirts, crafts, accessories, etc. So much fun!

Not only do I love their clothes, but their photo styling and themes are also amazing and fun. Its like they have stepped right out of vintage magazines!

Looking for something fun to do this weekend? The Music Man is playing at the Empress and it is delightful!

It is well casted, well played, well choreographed, well costumed, and well acted. Professor Harold Hill, played by Eric Barney, is full of energy and quite charming. My childhood friend, Nanny plays Mrs. Shin, the Mayors wife and her comedic timing is impeccable, but her daughter steals the show with her oobery-goobery sweet dresses and funny faces. This show is so much fun, you won't want it to end. If you only see one show at the Empress this year, I highly recommend this one! For tickets click here.

This was event was a culmination of many so many of our supplies and favorite ideas over the years. It left me feeling grateful for all I have learned and left me with satisfaction in my heart for my short wedding career.

They had a bird and vintage theme. Her colors were navy and yellow with touches of coral. Because we went vintage, we accented in ivory as much as possible.

Check out this great car! We brought props so all guests could have photos taken.

End of an Era (for me)

After 8 years in the event planning business, I have decided to take a sabbatical (could be full on retirement, who knows) For now, there will be no more meeting with brides, collecting inspiration for a theme, flower arranging, decorating, hostessing events, eating wedding cake at least once a month, or late nights of clean-up.

Instead I have chosen to focus on other endeavors:

1. My real, full-time job. Although not as glamorous as the wedding business, the secondary job added a lot stress and distraction from my career which also happens to be the primary income source for our family.

2. My family. It wasn’t until I was finished with my last event and didn’t have any obligations in the evenings that following week that I realized how much I really LOVE being home and spending time with my husband my puppy.

3. Finally, I REALLY want to have a baby. Although we have been working on this for years, I think I often used the weddings and just generally keeping busy, to distract me from the fact that it hasn’t happened for us yet. I am fed up now, and have realized I need to put as much energy, time, effort, studying, etc. into this endeavor as I can possibly muster, as it isn't going to come easy for us. I didn’t want to face the emptiness that I feel when I slow down, but have decided that I have to face these emotions head on in order to achieve our goal.

I must admit this has given me a bit of an identity crisis, but I am working through it and hope to find other means of creativity, identity and comfort in a slower pace and different direction. So, although my wedding posts were few and far between, my work will no longer be found here. However, I do still hope to find inspiration in the great world around us and hope you will not stray too far from me. Please still be my friend and read my blog. (In case you haven’t noticed. This decision has also provided more time for blogging too!) I do have one more wedding to post and feel fortunate that I was able to go out with a bang. I hope you enjoy Jordan & Shelby’s wedding soon to come.

P.S. My Mom and Aunt are continuing on in the business so if you or someone you know are looking for an event planner or florist, I would be happy to give you their info. Don’t hesitate to ask!

Brigham City, UT LDS Temple

While driving our broken down car on the backroads from Tremonton to Salt Lake, as we couldn't get it to go over 40 mph, we drove past the new LDS Brigham City Temple. It is by far my favorite design for a new temple I have seen in a long time. It was like an updated classic. Reminiscent of Manti, Logan, and especially Salt Lake, it had a very traditional feel. However it was modernized with cleaner lines, without the ornate decoration that was popular in the late 1800's. Plus, its startlingly white exterior was so crisp and clean. I was totally struck by its beauty. Great job designers...whoever you may be. Now I am even more anxious to see the interior. I hope it lives up to the glory that is exhibited on the exterior and is kept modern, yet traditional, 'cuz if you notice by the name of my blog, I like that sort of thing!

Kate Moss' Wedding

Have you seen all the glorious details from Kate Moss's wedding. I think she did a fabulous job mixing the vintage garden weddings that are popular right now with the formal touches of classic weddings (expected to gain in popularity after William and Kates royal wedding).

The charming English countryside church looks like a page out of the historial fiction novels I love so much!

I am really amazed how she took touches of all different eras (the dresses: 20's, the cars: 70's, the church probably dating back to the 1700's) and made them all work together. I believe color has a lot to do with it. Keeping with the soft Ivory pallettes made things feel cohesive. Everything looked easily elegant without being too stuffy. I am totally impressed!

Moab 2011, continued

We headed out early the next morning to get a jump on the hiking.

Mason loves to take pictures and has become quite proficient. (Of course I have given him plenty of practice over the years with the weddings and all.) He once said, "you can't claim to be any kind of photographer in Utah unless you have a picture of Delicate Arch." He was looking forward to going and getting his own picture. When we were only 30 miles from Moab however, I turned to him and said, "I didn't see you pack the camera, did you grab it?" He was devastated as he realized he didn't even bring it. Thank goodness we live in a day and age where we all have cameras in our phones and I am really grateful my husband got me a nice new one for my birthday this year.

Moab 2011

Our first Moab trip! Neither Mason nor I had ever been to Moab before so we jumped at the chance to tag along with Megan and Paul and were thrilled when Courtney decided to join us too! We stayed in these darling little "cottages."

They were TINY but very reasonably priced and I was thrilled that we didn't have to camp!

The girls LOVE Mike Rowe, so of course we had to get a picture with him! One of the stores had his cut out as they were featured on "Dirty Jobs" for their Red Rock t-shirts made from real Moab . (You can see them in the background)

Saturday was all about the river rafting. We had such a ball! The water was super high, which I thought might keep the rapids more calm, but in fact it was just the opposite.

10 Year Reunion

In June we held our Cyprus High School Class of 2001 10 year reunion. I was so thankful to our head cheerleader, Aubrey, for stepping up to the plate to plan it. Our Senior Class Officers weren't interested in doing one so Aubrey took it upon herself to make it happen. She put together a great & diverse committee, which Mason and I were honored to be a part of. We loved getting involved.

I was actually super nervous as the day approached to see all these people again. Luckily it turned out to be way more comfortable and fun than I ever thought possible. I loved that we kept the event relatively simple, and hopefully affordable as a result.

Mason was our "Master of Ceremonies" and did a wonderful job, if I do say so myself.

Senior Slide Show - Aubrey transferred the old senior slideshow that was played at our Assembly back in 2001, from VHS to DVD and added updated pictures of those who attended the event. We look forward to making it a tradition to coninually add to it for future events.

Struck by light fixtures

While window shopping at The Gateway recently I spotted this great light fixture at Z Gallerie. I loved the mix of chandelier and lamp, so I just had to take a picture of it, for my own memory.

While digitally thumbing through Lonny Mag's July/August issue I came across a similar fixturehung in the Heidelburg, Germany home they were highlighting. Once again I was struck by how cool it is.

Pioneer Day 2011

I am a little slow in posting, but we had a wonderful Pioneer Day and I want to remember.
First, I attended the Sunrise Devotional at the Tabernacle early in the morning. Elder Hinkley spoke and it was great to hear the stories of different types of pioneers that helped settle this valley. The music by the choir and it set the tone for the day for me. A great way to start my celebration!

Then I went home to meet up with Mason. We decided to bag the parade completely (heresy I know)

and went to breakfast instead.

Finally we went to This is the Place Heritage Park. It was such a great experience to have a taste of pioneer life that day. They also had great activities and demonstrations of pioneer life.

It really was the perfect way to celebrate our Pioneer Heritage and those who were brave enough to actually settle this desolate land. We are so thankful to them and all their sacrifices. Happy Pioneer Day!

Women at the Well Performance

Our ward put on a production of Kenneth Cope's "Women and the Well." This program is such a beautiful representation of the interactions Christ had with Women in the scriptures, told through music. It was such a faith promoting experience as we were able to delve into the stories and represent these faith-filled women on stage.

There was a lot of time and effort put in by the cast and especially by the directors. I was amazed at how well it actually came together and how much talent we have in our ward. Not only singing and performing, but costume design, set design / construction, tech crew. It took a lot of hard work to make it happen. It was one of those experiences that binds the ward and creates lasting frienships. Awesome!

New Phone!

My husband spoiled me and got me a new HTC Sensation phone for my birthday this year. I have never had a smart phone before and am still trying to figure out how to use it. I am most excited to have a decent camera on my phone and that apparently I can blog from it...maybe? I am still trying to figure that out, but it has been wonderful so far and I can't wait to get better acquainted with it. Thanks for spoiling me, Honey!

Peacock Wedding continued

The reception was held that evening at an old historic pioneer home in Cedar City. In fact is was the first 2-story home to be built in Cedar. What a wonderful venue for this reception too. It was perfect! For the Wedding at the ranch we tried to go a little more rustic and country, but for the reception, we went more "Shabby Chic"

I am totally digging the cream/ivory we are seeing a lot these days.
I wasn't sure what I thought about the idea of the groom being in creams too, but once I saw it, I loved it!

Upgraded chairs make a huge difference! Simple, elegant chair-ties with a little bit of texture to the fabric were added along with a feather.

Lessons Learned:
1. Juxtaposition: it is so hot right now to mix a little glam with rustic, or glitz with old industrial. Even if pieces don't necessarily go together, you can still make it work.

2. Have a plan B: the table arrangments were supposed to go up on tall vases, but the wind was so intense, they kept getting knocked over and even breaking. We had to just roll with it. Find a way to put them flat on the tables (in this case we just used plates) and then pinned the layers of linens together to keep them from blowing away.

3. If you want to class up your event, the easiest way is by sticking with white or ivory linens. There is reason these are the basic (and cheapest) offerings, because they look the best. Layering and adding texture form various fabrics in the same tone will make it look rich. If you keep with a basic color you might also have room in the budget up upgrade to higher quality fabrics and longer lengths. This also keeps an event from looking like a rainbow threw up. Let the flowers, ribbons, and people bring in the color.

Bountiful Baskets

Sometimes I hate to give away too many secrets, but this one has totally changed my life, so I decided to share. Back in January, Mason and I decided to order from a food co-op. I took this picture at that time because I couldn't believe all the wonderful produce we got for only $15. Since then we have ordered about every other week (as we have hard time eating everything in just one week) and I still have not gotten over the thrill. It feels like Christmas never knowing what you are going to get, but just knowing it will be good, health and plentiful.

Here are a few of the things I love:
1. It saves a lot of $$$
2. It forces us to eat more fruits and vegetables
3. We get to try new things or more exotic things that we probably would not have bought otherwise
4. I try more new recipes. Its fun to look up recipes for what we have recieved and find inventive ways to use the produce
5. It gets me up and going on Saturday mornings as our pick up time is usually 7:00 am(I just hate when I see people I know as I have just rolled out of bed!)

There are so many great reasons that I love this program all you have to do is register on their website. They have pick-up locations all across the U.S. but spaces are limited so you have to be really on top of things to get in on the action. (That is why Mason is in charge of placing our order, not me!)

Peacock Wedding

Recently, we traveled to Cedar City to do a Peacock themed wedding. The wedding ceremony and luncheon was at the Diamond Z Ranch. It was a stunning upscale private ranch owned by the inventor of Xerox, (if that gives you any indication of the magnitude of this place). We only got a few images of the wedding and none of the luncheon :( . The event wound up being a little bit country, a little glitz, and a decked out with the beautiful peacock feathers and colors.

They did a sand ceremony for part of the ceremony. I had never seen one done before and thought it was pretty cool.
It was so windy that day, but hopefully it just added to the atmosphere to have the ribbons blow in the breeze.

I wish I were an avid reader, but I am not. I often have a hard time finding books that capture my attention, but this one caught it and kept it for all 500 + pages. I was fascinated by the culture and the civil rights injustices of only 50 years ago. It seems we have come light years since then.

Publishers weekly synopsis:

"...set during the nascent civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver. Eugenia Skeeter Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops by writing about what disturbs you. It was refreshing to read a book that didn't need to be censored or feel like my heart was being torn out due to the horrific images words on a page can paint in my head. Although the book addressed many of the heartbreaking discriminations of the times, it was somehow kept rather light, beautiful, and poignant. I didn't want the book to end.

Now, as many of you know they are making it into a movie. I can hardly wait! Although the books are always better than the movie, based on this trailer, it looks Hollywood has done a good job of capturing the picture of the 60's country club housewives, their children, their neiborhoods and their "help."

If you haven't read the book, I highly recommend it!

Portrait of a Lady Wedding

I loved how this wedding turned out. Based on a wedding we saw in a local wedding magazine, we recreated a similar feel for our bride, Dayna. The pinks, yellows and whites were so fresh and the feminine accent elements including lots of lace made it simply beautiful.

This was a collaborative effort between my Aunt Kim, her friend, my mom, and me. The only pieces I can claim were mine alone were the bouquets (bridal and bridesmaids) but I feel we made a pretty good team as each of us were able to shine with our own elements.

I was impressed with how beautifully everything came together. Hopefully the bride was pleased too.

Wedding tips for 2 receptions/events:

1. I don't know if you could even tell, but the all the centerpieces were done well in advance as they were all done in silks. From there the rest of the flowers including the bridal party flowers were a mix of fresh and silk. It is really a nice option if there are 2 reception sites, to be able to plan ahead, and to ensure the right flowers come in the right colors (as we often find challenging)

2. I love the banner my aunt had printed. It was printed on canvas and then my mom sewed up the edges and added tassles. What a statement piece that is once again reuseable for their 2nd event. Yay!

Life on the Ship

I'll tell you what, I think Cruising is THE way to vacation. This was our second cruise and it is so amazing! I don't know if I could ever tire of it.

The beautifully cleaned rooms, towel animals, next day's itinerary (this is my favorite, planning out the next day), chocolates, and even a window this time. Yay!

Late night games and 24 hour pizza with friends...

Formal nights

Dance competitions. Mike and Mason participated in an air guitar off. How could we choose who was better as they were both hilarious!! Later during the Michael Jackson dance off, we could not have been prouder of our Bishop tying for 1st place. Who knew he could bust a move like that. Wow!

The Midnight buffet was exquisite. Along with the yummy food I appreciated the artistry

Mason laboriously collected these awesome Luchador masks for him and my brothers to have as souvenirs.

Who can resist the chocolate bar? Note that fuzzy face...

As we splurged and got him a mens facial from the spa complete with a barbering lesson. He got it just in time for our final formal night. Isn't he handsome!

The last day they we went on a tour of the kitchen and had to capture them working on our beloved chocolate melting cakes. Those are seriously the best dessert I have ever had!

La Paz

This may have been my favorite stop. It was a clean, darling little town with lots of color and history. After a little exploring...

...we went on a history tour. First up a Catholic church

The inner sanctuary which seemed to resemble what some might call a Holy of Holies.

It possessed lots of elements that surprised us. Like this piece of art depicting Father, Son and Holy Ghost. It was a pleasant surprise for us to find this in the Sanctuary of the ancient (by our standards) church.

Authentic pottery makers and other artisans keep this small town thriving.

We finished up the day with a swim with the sea lions.

I love the movie, I love the musical, and I loved our choir performances in High School to a couple songs from the show. So I don't wether I feel it is sacreligious that there is a remake coming out or whether I should be thrilled. Either way I will probably go see it.

Cabo - Day 2

Although we were scheduled to go to Mazatlan, the port was cancelled due to the violence. Once we learned of the reason, we were a-okay with that decision. So it was back to Cabo for another day.

And on the other side was Divorce Beach. The Pacific Ocean was really violent that day and we weren't allowed to go in. It still beautiful though and quite majestic.

One of the most adventurous parts of our whole vacation was dismounting an mounting the boat. There was no sand landing here.

After playing in the waves at Lovers Beach our suits were FULL of Sand. We tried to wash out as much as we could in the community showers, but I think we took half the beach back to the ship with us.

We were starving by this point but wanted to find real authentic Mexican food. We wandered until we found the perfect taco joint as recommended by one of the local ex-pats.

We were serenaded by the cook, who may have been the biggest Beatles fan alive

Then I walked away from Cabo with the most amazing pewter tray. That alone made the trip totally worth it and everything else was icing on the cake!

Recently, we had the fabulous opportunity to go on a Mexican Riviera Cruise with some friends from the ward. It was rather last minute but one of the best decisions we ever made! I am so grateful we were able to go!!!

We stayed the first night in Vegas and just had to explore the town a little. We made a stop by Gold and Silver Pawn from the the show Pawn Stars.

I was totally in awe of the idea of the Neon Graveyard. Oh how I wanted to do a photo shoot there!

After a great dinner and my getting sick, we settled down for the night, 6 people in one room. It was tight but added to the adventure (and saved $, got to love that!)

Arriving in California to board our cruise, we were all so excited! (We thought we were unique when we bought our red luggage, guess we thought wrong!)

Mexico here we come!

So obviously I am way behind on updating my blog, and I even have a lot to post. I am working on it. In the mean time though, there have been a few things that have been very inspiring to me lately and I don't want to forget them. What better way to remember than to put them on them on my blog, right? I hope you one or two readers who still check my outdated blog might be inspired by them too.

The "Stella" cake From appolina.com . Inspired by Stella McCartney's spring line. I love the idea of fashion influencing other designs, even food. Doesn't this look beautiful, rustic, and so fresh!?!

Do any of you get excited by organization? Still one of my favorite features in my home right now are the simple white cardboard office organizers. So simple, so clean, and cohesive. I love Sara Hicks Malone's home organization as see on designsponge.com. There is something about the freshness of monocramatic white that seems clean and ogranized and totally strikes my fancy.

I stopped in my tracks and had to research out this couch when I saw it on a blog a while ago. Of course, it is way out of my budget being from Anthropologie, but I still can't help but think how perfect it is. Maybe one day...

I've always wanted to do an ultra-feminine tea party for a shower, but have yet to have the opportunity. I loved this Cupcakes and Tea Baby Shower as seen on Hostess with the Mostest. The epitome of all things lovely.

Do you "get" modern art? I will totally admit I don't, but is there really something to "get" or is it just the appreciation of the beautiful colors and movement of a piece? Regardless, it is not often I am struck by a painting, but I just wanted to wrap up in this one. I think it is so lovely, warm and feminine. So I had to check out this artists collection, and surprisingly all of her pieces were equally as beautiful. I am totally impressed!

Amy Atlas did a piece on one of her readers sock monkey parties. Which was totally adorable, but it was that yellow door with the cut outs that caught my attention. I would LOVE a door like that! What do you think of bright colored doors?

Worlds Away kit on etsy. I have less than a green thumb, but I love being surrounded by living things.

These succulents in this beautiful orb seem so idealic.

Did you hear? H&M is opening a store at Fashion Place Mall! I missed my chance to check out the Las Vegas location when we were down there in March, so I am thrilled they will now be coming to me! The Murray location is slated to open a large 2 story, 23,000 sq ft store this fall. I can't wait!

Women at the Well

Our very talented ward will be presenting Kenneth Cope's "Women at the Well" this weekend and I would love to invite anyone who might read this to come see it. I feel it is an incredibly spiritual experience to see a live portrayal of Christ and the women he interacted with while on the earth. The music is beautiful and brings in the powerful message of the Gospel and the love of our Savior.

Dates: Friday April 29 & Saturday April 30

Time: 7:00pm

Location: LDS Chapel 250 West 500 North, Salt Lake City

The show is just over an hour long and you will probably recognize some of the songs as they have been floating around for a number of years now. My hope is it will carry the spirit of Easter on for another week. I'd love to see you there!

Guava & Champagne Wedding

Although I didn't plan this wedding, it was a ball to work with my aunt (who we often partner with on weddings) for her daughter's wedding. It was held at a church, but was totally decked out! I wouldn't expect anything less from them. Almost every member of our extended family helped to pull this event off, so not only was it absolutely beautiful, but I feel like it was a neat experience for all of us to come together and make it happen.

Highlight of the night: when the bride called her mom to say, "This was beyond my wildest dreams. Thank you so much Mom." That has got to be a big pay off!

Wedding hints:
1. Remember to be gracious. As a bride or parents of the bride, it takes a lot of work to make an event like this happen. A simple "Thank you" can go a long way.

2. Color!!! The shades of pink, orange, guava, and champagne made the place feel so festive, fun yet elegant. Spending a little extra on good colored linens (I especially like ones with texture) to cover a basic white, black, or ivory (use a basic to keep it grounded) ties everything together. DON'T BE AFRAID TO USE SHADES of your colors. It is one of my pet peeves when working with brides, when they aren't willing to budge on th idea of using variations. It adds depth and dimension rather than having everything be flat and stark contrasts. I promise that everything will look more professional if you are willing to use shades & textures.

3. If you are planning a dance, hire a DJ. I know it is tempting to just hook up an ipod and play music, which works great for background music, but if you really want to get people dancing a good DJ knows how to keep the party going, can take requests, provides a good sound system for announcements, etc. I am a firm believer that a DJ makes a dance happen.

This was truly one of the most stunning LDS Church receptions I have seen. I was thrilled to get to be a part of it. Congrats Biz and Brad!

This one was so much fun! The costs were kept low by borrowing decor from neighbors, friends, and the Empress Theater (we know a guy!). Yet it came across with a clear theme and style. Perfect for this bride and groom!

Have you tried Beyond Glaze? I first tried their beautiful and delectable doughnuts while I was in charge of Monday treats at my old job. At that time I had to drive all the way down to Draper to pick them up. Now though we are fortunate enough to have one right downtown. Exciting...yet dangerous. I have yet to stop by there myself (are you proud of me?) but Mason has spoiled his co-workers with these goodies a couple of times already.

Their philosphy is fresh gourmet doughnuts that go "beyond glaze." They have the most incredible combinations of flavors brought to life with their tasty frostings & toppings applied in tantilizing fashion.

I know it sounds crazy but Mason's favorite doughnut is the Maple Bacon. Just ask the pregnant girls at his work; these pastries satisified all kinds of cravings in one fell swoop and Mason just happened to be the big hero for sharing his favorite treat.

My husband loves science and has spent countless hours in the science labs at school. So last year, Valentines Day 2010, I decided we would conduct our own experiment, which I titled

"The Chocolate Experience"

Sparkling water

Plastic knives

And of course, our ballots

The rules were as follows:

Purchase 1 dark chocolate truffle (my favorite kind)
Purchase 1 of whatever they consider to be their most unique or signature chocolate
Observe the packaging & the ambiance of the store
Study the design & texture of each one
Cut each in half to smell, and see the inside
Taste the chocolate paying attention to the chocolate coating & the filling
Finally fill out the ballot for each selection tasted

It was also the longest line that we had to wait in and I remember thinking, "this can’t be worth it," but to totally was! Plus I am a sucker for ambiance, design, and nostalgia, so not only were the chocolates my favorite, but the store was as well.

This was a great way to spend our Valentines Day 2010.

We all know music can set the tone for our emotions, so how fortunate we are that Pandora has created a station of all love songs all the time. Did you know it is officially "Marriage Week" across the USA? With a degree in Family and Human Development, I am all about relationships! However, studying them for 4 years made me realize that I am anything but an expert as there is so much more to learn and there are always coming out with new studies, new theories, and new methods of doing things. I believe that even healthy marriages benefit from learning preventative measures and focusing on rekindling your "spark." Marriage takes work, but this is one case where we can benefit by focusing on the fun stuff first. If we do that while our marriages are strong, hopefully we won't have to deal with the really hard stuff later on.

1. I don't particularly enjoy all the cheesey heartshaped boxes, red roses, and stuffed animals (I am so relieved my husband has figured this out!)

Happy Chinese New Year

(I started this post on Chinese New Year and am just now posting it, sorry for the out of date info! There's always next year!)

I work with a lovely Chinese couple who wanted to celebrate the new year with us so they brought lunch for the whole office on Wed. Isn't that sweet! I must admit I was a little confused to walk into the kitchen and find ham sanwiches and chips and salsa, although grateful, I thought "what does this have to do with Chinese New Year?"

Come to find out, thanks to the lovely contributors to wikipedia, it is tradition to eat "pigs, ducks, chicken and sweet delicacies." Although it made only a little more sense (I still don't get the chips and salsa), it peaked my interest, so course I had to read the rest of the article.

Some of my favorite traditions I would love to incorporate into our family traditions:

1. I love the idea of the family pitching to clean the house top to bottom "to sweep away any ill-fortune in hopes to make way for good incoming luck"

2. Red Envelopes or red packets filled with various sums of money are given from married couples or the elderly to unmarried juniors. It is also common for adults or young couples to give red packets to children. Red packets are also known as 壓歲錢/压岁钱 or Ya Sui Qian, which translated means "the money used to suppress or put down the evil spirit"

3. Latern Festival inspired decor. The tradition had something to do with celebrating and cultivating positive relationships between people, families, nature and the higher beings that were believed to be responsible for bringing or returning the light each year. Usually takes place on the 15th day of the celebration

4. Of course eat Chinese Food (we like Asian Isle, do you have a favorite?) and try to stick with

5. Firework Display
Bamboo stems filled with gunpowder that were burnt to create small explosions were once used in ancient China to drive away evil spirits. In modern times, this method has eventually evolved into the use of firecrackers during the festive season.

Ultimately, our Chinese friends compared Chinese New Year to our American Thanksgiving. A time when much of the city closes down and everyone migrates home to be with their family. I would love to incorporate more of these traditions into our family life. Sounds like so much fun.

Wedding tips:

#1 Hang decor from the ceiling. Although we kept it relatively simple it was so much fun to hang our empty frames, our chandelier, and a couple flower arrangements from wires strung across the gym. It gave the decor a new dimention and made the room more cozy as we were able to bring elements away from the walls.

#2 Add some homey elements. I loved bringing my lamps and my mom's end tables to flank the backdrop. The Damask curtains tied back and hung from the back drop made it almost feel as if the bride and groom were welcoming their guests into their personal home. This gives a very friendly and intimate feel to the not very cozy or intimate setting of a gymnasium.

Since he could drive at 16, Mason has always wanted a jeep. We had been a one car family for about 4 months , after the Ford Taurus (my first car) finally died. He had been researching cars and decided on a 4 door Jeep Wrangler. He certainly knows his wife and knew all the key buttons to push to convince me that this was the car for us.

I am not a car person so I couldn't care less about what we bought, and his argument was very convincing, we moved forward and bought the Jeep. It was so satisfying to me to fulfill one of his dreams. Happy Birthday Mason!
